Identity thieves trick victims into revealing their personal details in various ways.
Telling you that you have failed to report for jury duty then asking for personal details to avoid a bench warrant for your arrest,
Telling you that you have won a prize and then requesting that you send a check to cover the taxes on the prize, which they then cash and put in their own pocket. You don't win anything, by the way.
Calling to tell you that you can get a better interest rate on a credit card account and then asking you for personal financial information so they can check your credit to see if you qualify.
Getting a bogus e-mail from the IRS telling you that you have been successfully signed up for their automated tax service, but when you click to confirm it allows them into your computer where they can later convince you that your social security number has been stolen, etc.
If you or someone you know has been exposed to other such scams, let us know and we will post it here to alert our Harper County residents to avoid them.
